My name is Angela, and I am your Dessert and Chocolate Tasting Mini Club leader for the term! I am a B.Sc. Psychology major, and love to watch TV, sing karaoke, and, of course, eat! I don’t know about you, but I always find my sweet tooth (teeth?) craving a certain sweet tasting something-or-other, whether it be lemon meringue pie or coconut gelato. Our first event coming up will be at Bella Gelateria, where we will get a taste of their amazing gelato while we can get to know each other. Some events I’ve got lined up are visits to Crème de la Crumb, Thomas Haas Fine Chocolates & Patisserie, and an end-of-term dessert picnic. Of course, I’m open to any suggestions you may have as well.
Can’t wait to meet you all!

Event 1: Gelato tasting at Bella Gelateria – Feb 26, 2011
There are few things in the world better than gelato… On a snowy day??
That’s right, we went to have gelato on one of the coldest days in Vancouver. It was still wonderful, despite the weather!
I had the Green Tea and Rosewater flavors – I remember the Rosewater gelato actually having pieces of flower petals in it. Quite the unusual novelty, but both flavors were delicious! I would definitely go back on a summer day. What did some of you have, and how did you like it? Leave a message in the comment box below if you like
Afterwards, as it was a weekend and many of us hadn’t had lunch yet, we wandered around downtown for a place to eat. We finally settled on Red Robin, facing a dilemma because we were freezing out in the cold, and being as indecisive as we were.
A great first meeting!
Event 2: Cakes cakes cakes – Mar 11, 2011
For our second meeting, we tasted 3 different cakes from Vancouver bakeries. Delicious, although thinking about the calorie count frightens me – just don’t think about it and it goes away, right? Haha anyways, the cakes included selections from my favorite bakery in Vancouver, Sweet E’s in Kerrisdale, as well as cupcakes from Cupcakes by Heather & Lori. We had some sugar cookies as we waited for people to arrive.
We each had ratings sheets in which we rated each of the cakes in terms of Originality (/5), Appearance (/5), Taste (/5), and Nutritional Value (/5), and then tallied them up for a total out of 20. I then averaged all the scores after the event.
And here are the results!
Sweet E’s
Chocolate Butterscotch Pecan Cake - 15/20
Yes, it looks as good as it tasted. Mmm. The problem is, this is the last one we tasted, which turned out to be a little bit of a problem, as it was far too sweet, rich and filling. Not to mention that some people got huge slices due to my slicing fail (The plastic knife’s handle broke ): ): ) But hey, that’s a grade of 75% – B+, not too shabby
Classic Lemon MEringue Tart – 17/20
My favorite dessert! And as an aside, Sweet E’s offers these in adorable mini versions of which I am a huge fan
The meringue and the lemon were delicious on the crust. Too sweet for some people, but OMG I loved this.
Cupcakes by Heather & Lori
Blue Hawaii Cupcakes – 15/20
Yay cupcakes! These were adorable – and I’m quite proud of the fact that they held up despite the fact that I carried them around the whole day from when I got them in the morning. Lots of yummy coconut to be had from this cupcake, although for some, it wasn’t their favorite flavor.
Conclusion:
The Lemon Meringue Tart won! Woohoo, I knew my favorite dessert would not fail.
Haha NO bias on my part at all during the averaging.
Hope everyone had fun at this event, see you next time!
